QE Student Michael Smith Named ‘One to Watch’ at National Film Awards

Michael Smith, a gifted young filmmaker and student at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College (QE), has been named a winner at the prestigious Into Film Awards—a national celebration of the UK’s best emerging creative talent. Michael, who is currently studying Photography, Film Studies, and Creative Media Practice, was nominated by his teacher and Course Leader, Beccy Vickers, in recognition of his outstanding passion for storytelling and filmmaking.

The 2025 Into Film Awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 24 June at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in London. This star-studded event celebrates the creativity of young people aged 5–19 from across the UK, with 11 award categories spanning documentary, animation, storytelling, and community impact. The “Ones to Watch” category—sponsored by EON Productions—highlights three exceptional individuals poised to make a significant mark on the screen industries.

Michael’s journey as a filmmaker began at just eight years old. At sixteen, he wrote and directed his first feature-length documentary, Streets of Steel: The History of Witton Park, which premiered to local acclaim in early 2024. His compelling exploration of local history captured the attention of Teescraft Engineering and Durham County Council, who have since commissioned him to create a new documentary celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Beyond the camera, Michael is deeply rooted in his community. For the past five years, he has volunteered as a videographer and conducted post-match interviews for local sports events. He also lends his talents to large-scale productions such as the Kynren outdoor theatre spectacle and the Hardwick Live music festival.

Speaking about his award, Michael said “I’ve accepted the ‘Ones to Watch’ award with great privilege and relish. The prospect of even being considered in this category has hugely influenced my decision to pursue filmmaking as a full-time career.”

Beccy Vickers, Course Leader of Creative Media Practice at QE, praised Michael’s dedication: “Michael is the most humble and unassuming young man—a true pleasure to teach. He has been a passionate filmmaker from a young age and is gifted in every sense of the word. His college work has been exceptional, showing a sophisticated understanding of cinematography and editing. Michael is ‘one to watch’ because his drive and talent, together with the quality of his past and current filmmaking, make it clear that we can expect great things from him.”

Michael’s success stands as a personal triumph and a powerful reminder of how local stories—when told with heart and skill—can resonate on national stages and inspire future generations.
